My name is Alex Rolland. When I was a toddler, I watched my parents get murdered by a man in a hood. I was then kidnapped and smuggled to the USSR, where I was made into someone else … into something else. Now I am back to Nigeria to avenge all those who have suffered, like me, at the hands of cruel, corrupt politicians. I am … The Nivenger!

Episode 3

The drive to their secret base at the airport was a long and silent one. Alex wanted to engage Masha in a conversation, but she set her face in such a way that it was difficult for Alex to open up his mouth. Seeing Masha again, after so many years, and kissing her as passionately as the last time they had been together, Alex began to remember what it was like leaving her, the anguish, the pain, the suffering, the darkness, the gloom … and finally, the Nivenger, which had been born.

Masha had sworn never to set her eyes on him again, for breaking her heart. He had left without even saying goodbye. He had left without explaining why he had to, why she couldn’t come with him, or why they couldn’t be together because of what he intended to do. After all they had been through, after risking their lives to root out all the traitors in the Russian Government, including saving the Russian President from assassination (and receiving the highest honor any Russian citizen could receive), Alex had still walked away.

Alex had tried to start a new life in Nigeria, not because he didn’t love Masha, but because Masha had sworn never to look at him again. So when she had called him, he was surprised. Now she was in his car. She had saved his life. She had kissed him. What had changed? Alex was indeed ecstatic, as he realized that his burning desire for Masha had not dwindled by even a jot, in spite of their time apart.

Lexie was waiting for them at the gate when they drove in.

“I’ve found him,” he said with a wide smile on his face. He smelled of coffee and computer air. His hair was busy and he was scraggly looking. Alex had known that Lexie was spending so much time and energy trying to find the ever-elusive Mr. Bode Shobowale, he just didn’t know the search was taking Lexie down, one pound of flesh at a time. And it wasn’t like there was a lot of flesh to begin with since Lexie was naturally thin.

Lexie was about to proc d, when Masha stepped out of the car and came to stand at Alex’s side.

Lexie held his tongue, looking between Alex and Masha. Then he said, “Who’s this?” pointing at Masha, who didn’t seem to mind.

Alex cleared his throat and said, “Lexie, meet my wife, Masha Rolland. Masha meet my friend and mate in the fight against corruption and the Cabal, Lexie Whitehall.”

Masha gave a polite smile. “Nice to meet you, Lexie.” However, Lexie’s mouth was agape.

“You wife?” he asked, stunned. “When the heck did you get married?”

Alex said, “Be nice, Lexie. Masha is standing right in front of you.”

Lexie became aware of his social blunder. He tried covering up his shame with a smile and a brisk greeting.

“Who did you say you’ve found?” asked Masha.

Again, Lexie hesitated. “Is she cleared for this?”

Alex nodded, but Masha was already talking, “Look, Lexie, I am cleared for whatever you’re cleared for and much more.”

Lexie was about to reply, when Alex said, “Please. Lexie, she saved my life. The twins almost killed me.”

Lexie sighed and said, “I’ve finally located Mr. Bode Shobowale. He’s currently in an apartment in East Side, New York. He’s going to be there for three days before he lives for Melbourne, where he’s scheduled to meet with some investors. Three days gives us enough time to get to the States, interrogate the guy, and find out the Cabal elder he knows.”

Masha and Alex didn’t look impressed. Lexie said, “You don’t look impressed.”

Alex said, “That’s because we know that the Cabal will be having an emergency session in Lagos Island tomorrow. We know the venue and the time. We have finally caught them, Lexie.”

Lexie arched an eyebrow. “Is that so? And how did you know this?”

“The twins,” replied Masha, folding her arms across her chest. “They gave the Cabal up for me sparing their lives. I expect them to be leaving the country by tomorrow.”

Lexie looked between Masha and Alex again the shrugged. “We still need to take down Mr. Bode Shobowale. He’s a criminal.”

“Lexie, contact the FBI, and give them all the proofs you have on Mr. Bode Shobowale, especially crimes he committed on US soil or against US interests. Build a very strong case against him and send all that information to the FBI field office in New York. Then send them Mr. Bode Shobowale’s itinerary for when he’s in the States so that they can pick him up and end his nuisance.”

Lexie thought about it for a while then said, “That’s a lot cheaper than flying to the US and operating on US soil.”

Alex nodded.

Lexie said, “Well, building a case is going to take quite some time. Maybe as much as ten hours.”

“Which gives you enough time to rest up for our final operation by 7 tomorrow.”

Lexie said, “Okay. I’ll get to it, then.”

Alex led Masha to a small room. “You can sleep here for the night.”

Masha sat on the bed and said nothing. Alex wanted to say more, he wanted to know more, but he just didn’t know what Masha was thinking or why she had come to Nigeria. He bade her sweet dreams and went to find a mattress to lay his head for the night.
